TYPE 1 DIABETES

Signs and Symptom

Causes

Risk Factors

Pathobiology

Type 1 Diabetes involves a combination of autoimmune, genetic and environmental factors that target the insulin producing β cells and leads to β-cell death. Several genes are associated with this disease, however, most of them are unknown by scientists. Among the few that are known, are HLA genes. These genes are found on chromosome 6 (on the short arm) and lead a 50% genetic susceptability to Type 1 diabetes. There are 2 HLA class II haplotypes, DR4-DQ8 and DR3-DQ2

Management of Type 1 Diabetes

Treatments and drugs

1) Intensive Insulin Therapy

2) Pancreas Transplant

3) Islet Transplantation
