CDK4 is another gene that is changed through inherited melanomas, preventing them from carrying out their normal activity of controlling cell growth (Long et al., 2011). However, it is important to note that most of the gene changes causing melanoma are not a result of inheritance. They are more likely caused by damage induced by environmental factors (“What Causes Melanoma Skin Cancer?,” n.d.). ​

Sun-sensitive skin such as fair skin types are more prone to sunburn. Darker skin has been found to protect against melanoma. In fact, in the United States, Caucasians are 8-19 times more likely than blacks to develop melanoma (Koh, Sinks, Geller, Miller, & Lew, 1993).
