Before You Start

The BME Student Handbook is a good place to start, even you are not in the BME program.

1. Confirm Your Registration online or at the Graduate Study Office (Gilmour Hall 212, Ext. 24258)

For the registration deadline of each semester, please check with:

  • Engineering Physics Graduate Secretary Ms. Marilyn Marlow
  • Biomedical Engineering administrator: Ms. Tina Thorogood,

International student must present to School of Graduate Studies the study permit to be fully registered

2. Obtain Student ID + bus pass + Direct Deposit + UHIP card

  • Go to the Graduate Study Office (Gilmour Hall 212, Ext. 24258) to pick up student ID + bus pass. International student will be asked to present study permit to fully registered.
  • For direct deposit: bring one void check + fill in forms for both Federal and Province tax return at Graduate Study Office (Forms can be obtained at the office)
  • For UHIP card, visit International student scholar service at Rm 104, Gilmour Hall or Contact: iss@mcmaster.ca. Note that UHIP card is only available after fully registered at Graduate Study.
  • International student: check out handbook at http://oisa.mcmaster.ca/pre-arrival.cfm which include info on SIN, transportation, travel ect.


3. Get Keys for Lab and/or Graduate Student Office

  • Contact Person: BME (see #1)
  • You need keys to ETB exterior (graduate student only), ETB 431, and the BME student office ETB 303. Most of these spaces now have key card access so you will need a Working@McMaster ID or an access card.


4. Enable MacID and Activate Student Email account

  • To enable MacID, click Here.. Then choose Activate MAC ID bar. Enter student ID, barcode and date of birth. Student ID is provided on Offer Letter. Barcode will be sent separately through email. If not, contact your department.
  • After enabling MAC ID, students have to enable MAC ID service before student email account can be activated. To enable MAC ID service, click Here.. Enter your MAC ID and password. Go to MUGSI to enable MAC ID service and email account
  • Email account will be activated 24 hours after your MAC ID service is enabled on MUGSI.

5. Apply Scholarships (NSERC, OGS, OGSST, etc.)

  • Contact persons: BME or Engineering Physics (see #1)

6. Your Personal Contact Information

  • Use your MacID (#4) to access our lab's wiki page;
  • Create a Skype account for work use

7. Sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA)

  • To be determined based on your project

8. Create your personal profile page in this Wiki Site

  • Upload personal profile picture, select from left hand panel, under toolbox heading
    • Upload File > Profile (make sure your file is uploaded correctly into this folder)
    • Save uploaded file as: last name and first initial.jpg
      • “Bob Smith” would be saved as smithb.jpg
  • Use another person's page as a template, and fill in necessary information, which should include:
    • Education, McMaster e-mail address, Research / Project Description, Schedule, and Safety Training

9. Safety Training

  • For more information, please check with EOHSS
  • You need to contact Ms. Marilyn Marlow to attend the Engineering Physics/CEDT safety training/orientation
  • Please go over your Job Hazard Analysis Form (from the Eng Phys safety orientation) with your supervisor
  • Everybody working in our lab should take:
    • Access to Online Training Portal
    • WHIMS core
    • Asbestos Awareness
    • Chemical Handling and Spills
    • Ergonomics
    • Fire Safety
    • Slips, Trips & Falls
    • Laser Safety
    • Biosafety
    • AODA Training
  • Everyone is required to list their up-to-date safety training record in their own personal profile page. Please use the table available here on the Lab safety page, as a template.
  • You are required to complete a Engineering Physics/ C.E.D.T. Research Hazards Safety Report;Example by Aparna, and put it in your own profile as well as on the Lab Safety Page

  • Additional Graduate/Undergraduate courses as required by the supervisory committee

2. Ph.D. comprehensive examination (for Ph.D. student only)
