Brent Emigh, B.Sc.

Pedicle screw spinal fixation is used specifically to achieve solid bone fusion in patients with scoliosis, fracture, spondylolisthesis, degenerative arthritis, or tumours in the spine. The pedicle screw provides a means of gripping a spinal segment and act as a firm anchor point that can be connected with an external rod. Pedicle screw insertion is challenging as the pedicle itself consists of only a narrow passage of bone into which screws need to b…

The strategy I used in pursuing my central question began with brainstorming the major contributing factors affecting the topic. Following this, I consulted my supervisor for an additional opinion. Based on my brainstorming and my supervisor’s input, I compiled a list of what I believed to be the most relevant aspects. I then chose a specific date by which I intended to have completed the research associated with each aspect. My intention was to continually revise my research di…

Inquiry Proposal

The portable mp3 player has revolutionized the way that people access music. People can easily carry all of their digital music files around with them in a small light-weight device. Many would argue that the popularity of such devices has had a profound effect on the revitalization of the company Apple [1]. In a sense, e-readers are analogous to mp3 players with respect to reading books.

Central Question: Why has the adoption of e-readers into the consumer market made so li…

Micro and Nano-Biosensing/Imaging Devices

Conventional optical spectroscopy and imaging systems are large, complex and costly optoelectronic instruments comprised of lasers, spectrophotometers, and detectors. Often, their size is the limiting factor for their use in certain applications such as in-situ monitoring of physiological processes and distributed environmental sensing. In practice, there are strong demands for miniaturized, integrated devices for biomedical applications.
