Current Openings

There are a few research positions available in the Biophotonics group, which is located in the newly renovated ABB photonics facility as well as in the McMaster Smart Home for Aging-in-Place (SHAPE) in Westdale. The potential project topics are:

  • ultrafast laser micromachining and additive manufacturing,
  • multiplexed confocal and their applications in drug discovery and multidimensional dynamic bioimaging
  • endoscopic imaging instrumentation
  • optofluidic sensing and their applications in point-of-care/need
  • Smart Home sensor networks for aging-in-place applications

It is also part of the Accelerated Master Program in Biomedical Engineering, especially (but not limited to) for students in the iBioMed program.

Requirements

  • Enthusiasm in biomedical engineering research
  • Undergraduate degree in photonics engineering, physics, EE/ECE, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, computing and software, life science/biochemistry,

integrated Sciences, and related fields.

  • Strong physics and math academic backgrounds

How to Apply

Interested students should e-mail an updated CV and unofficial transcript to biophotonics@mcmaster.ca.

Graduate Students

Potential graduate students may have background in one or more of the following areas:

  • Optics and physics
  • Electronics and image/signal processing
  • Biology, biochemistry w/ strong microscopy/tissue culture experiences
  • Tissue optics, microscopy, and other biophotonics research
  • Hands-on experiences in above areas, programming in Matlab, C/C++, Python, and/or LabView

PhD Position in Sensing/Imaging instrumentation and its biomedical applications (after Masters degree or direct entry from undergraduate)

We seek a graduate student with strong optics, physics, and/or electrical/mechatronics engineering background. The research project involves developing sensing/imaging instrumentation for imaging applications in biomedicine. Experiences and Knowledge in data acquisition, processing, and related areas are desirable.

Interested candidates are encouraged to send a CV (by email) to Dr. Q. Fang (qiyin.fang@mcmaster.ca).

Undergraduate Students

  • Major in Engineering, Sciences, Health Sciences, or Life Sciences
  • Summer research: NSERC USRA, GPA >= A- (10/12, 3.5/4, or 80%)
  • Work-Study: McMaster in-study students who qualifies for work-study/OSAP
  • We usually start recruiting summer students in December and January.
